While you’re looking after our child

A quick note on what we’ve agreed at home, so you can keep the same calm habits. Thank you.

The basics

Child’s first name
Devices down by

In our house, devices charge outside the bedroom overnight — this one habit does a lot.

What’s allowed

A few things we keep to. Add or cross out as you like.

e.g. which apps or games are fine, screen-time, whether new downloads wait until we’re back

The one line that matters

If you only say one thing, say this: “You can tell me anything — you won’t be in trouble.” A calm response is what we’re building.

If something feels off

What a normal evening looks like — and the simple steps if it doesn’t. Nothing here needs you to be an expert.

What “normal” looks like

  • Watching, gaming or messaging friends they know, mostly in shared rooms.
  • Happy to show you what they’re doing if you ask.
  • Winding down and handing the device over near the agreed time.

Worth a gentle look

  • Suddenly upset, secretive or hiding the screen.
  • Messages from someone they don’t know, or being asked to move to another app.
  • Being asked for money, photos, or personal details.

If something feels off

  1. Stop — calmly help them step away from it.
  2. Keep the device — don’t delete anything; leave messages as they are.
  3. Tell the parent — ring the number on the front as soon as you can.
Immediate danger — call 999. A worried or upset child — Childline 0800 1111 (free, under-19s, 24/7). An adult contacting or pressuring a child — CEOP at ceop.police.uk/safety-centre. A nude image of an under-18 shared or threatened — Report Remove via Childline, childline.org.uk/remove. Worried, not urgent — NSPCC 0808 800 5000.

You don’t need to handle anything difficult yourself — keeping the device as it is and telling us is exactly the right thing. Thank you for looking after them.
